We are looking for an individual to provide leadership in the area of training, coaching and technical support and assistance, with a particular focus on building client and stakeholder capacity to use data and research evidence. This individual will manage and lead projects, support and lead staff and contractors working on technical support and assistance projects, and work with clients and stakeholders to help carry out the priorities and goals of REL Northwest and the organization.  


Supervisory Responsibility:  None

  • Manage and lead large-scale technical support and assistance projects from scoping and budgeting to negotiating with clients to managing and supporting project teams and ensuring all deliverables are completed on time and on budget
  • Lead teams working to build the capacity of education leaders, policy makers and others to use research evidence to improve educational outcomes, with a focus on improving outcomes for underserved populations
  • Provide guidance and oversight to staff in conceptualizing and conducting high-quality technical assistance and support, with a focus on projects that build individual, organizational and system capacity to use data and research evidence
  • Provide quality assurance and coaching to enable staff to build and maintain effective teams, partnerships and client relationships
  • Lead business development and generate new technical support and assistance projects through partnership, proposal development, and grant writing
  • Develop and manage strategic relationships with stakeholders in the region and across the nation
  • Work collaboratively with staff from other organizational units; support colleagues in cross-organizational work
  • Communicate to the broader professional community through published papers, contributions to social and popular media, and presentations at regional and national conferences
  • Perform other related duties as assigned 

Ideal Candidates will possess

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in education or a related field preferred
  • 7+ years’ experience leading training and technical support efforts grounded in principles of adult learning and organizational development
  • Strong project management skills and experience scoping and directing a large portfolio of projects
  • Extensive experience leading multifunction and multilevel teams
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience building the capacity of diverse educational stakeholders to use data and evidence, including schools and districts, state and federal agencies, universities and university systems, policymakers, and/or community organizations
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing training focused on conducting, understanding, and applying research.
  • Demonstrated expertise coaching and consulting with states, districts, and other partners to solve local problems of practice
  • Demonstrated expertise in planning and conducting online learning opportunities for adult learners, including webinars, internet chats, and videos, and other new and engaging forms of professional learning opportunities
  • Experience leading teams and collaborating with communication professionals to produce high quality graphic summaries of research findings, including creating infographics
  • Good familiarity and some experience working with the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) evidence standards
  • Strong content knowledge in at least one of the following areas of focus: educator recruitment, retention and professional development; English learners; early learning; school improvement/accountability, and/or postsecondary readiness and success
  • Experience working in culturally diverse environments with a commitment to equity
  • Knowledge of federal research and technical assistance programs in education
  • Experience working in a professional services (billable hour) environment

Travel and Other Key Requirements

  • Up to 30% out-of-office travel with overnight stays of up to a week at a time
  • Reside in greater Portland, Oregon area or be willing to relocate
